A Message from Sister Maribeth Larkin, SSS, General Director

October 2020

Dear Friends and Supporters of our Community,

Warm greetings from Encino! Literally, the thermometer continues to read high levels, and reached a record 121 in Woodland Hills on Sunday, September 6! As the intense heat of summertime wanes, and many prayers for the coolness of fall are within us, we are reminded that as seasons change, so do we. Arguably, this has never been more evident as it is now, six months into the coronavirus pandemic. All of us, in some way or another, have been personally affected by the relentless ramifications of the virus. It has changed us as families, neighbors, friends, and even so in our own community of Sisters. We have been called upon to adjust our lives and how we do things, often with a sense of insecurity and uncertainty. This is no easy task, as I’m sure most of you would agree. I pray that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy, and know of our sincere prayers for your continued well-being.

Sr. Maribeth Larkin, General Director

As I write this message, I am filled with confidence and faith that the Holy Spirit is with us, every step of the way. “Come Holy Spirit” is a daily, if not hourly, affirmation. Indeed, the Holy Spirit is with us, as we continue to provide important resources and services to many struggling communities through our ministries across the world. I invite you to scroll down below this letter to read about some of the amazing things our Sisters are doing. Additionally, I encourage you to explore our new website to be inspired by our Sisters and the ministries they are keeping alive through the generosity of many volunteers and supporters. Please click HERE to read an important update from me, Sister Albertina (Regis House Director) and Sister Chris (Holy Spirit Retreat Center Director) which details the successes we are celebrating in the face of the pandemic as well as the challenges we are forecasting for the coming year. We thank you for your support of our Pandemic Relief Fund which we created in order to help offset the projected shortfalls. We are truly grateful! For more information about this and other ways to support the Sisters, please contact Mary Hatton, our new Director of Development, at (818) 285-3358 or mhatton@sssla.org.

Finally, we are poised and prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead, always keeping our mission of social transformation at the forefront of our daily lives, and knowing that all we do is enlivened by the Holy Spirit. Our world is desperately in need of restoration of the simple Gospel values – upholding and defending the sacredness of all life and respect for all human beings, keeping sacred the ideal of the Common Good, and acting as Jesus did with our attention focused toward those on the margins of society, “…the widow, the orphan, the stranger…”. We remember that the right of all people to live in dignity is at the heart of our work and of our religious faith.

These are the long-standing values of the SSS, to which we cling during these very challenging times. Please know of our continued prayers for each of you! We hope you enjoy our new email format and all of its news and information. We also invite you send us your prayer requests HERE, and we will keep your intentions close to our hearts.

May God’s blessings be with you in abundance,

Sister Maribeth Larkin, General Director
